The following table provides a brief description of each

Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State

 ACCESS

ACCESS is administered, annually, to all English language learners (ELLs) in Georgia. ACCESS for ELLs is a standards-based, criterion referenced English language proficiency test designed to measure English language learners' social and academic proficiency in English.

Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests

CRCT

The CRCT is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) and the Quality Core Curriculum (QCC). 

Students in grade 1 & 2 take the CRCT in the following content areas: (not tested for 2011 school year)

  • Reading
  • English/Language Arts
  • Mathematics

Students in grade 3 - 8 take the CRCT in the following content areas:

  • Reading
  • English/Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

 Georgia Alternative Assessment

GAA

This assessment program promotes a vision of enhancing capacities and integrated life opportunities for students who experience significant cognitive disabilities. Students with significant cognitive disabilities may be assessed via an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards. A portfolio of student work samples will be used to capture student learning and achievement/progress in the four content areas:

  • English/Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Georgia High School Graduation Test

GHSGT

All students seeking a Georgia high school diploma must pass the GHSGT in the following four content areas:

  • English/Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

These assessments ensure that students qualifying for a diploma have mastered essential core academic content and skills.  Students take the graduation tests for the first time in the eleventh grade. Students who do not pass on the first attempt of the tests have multiple opportunities to receive additional instruction, retest, and qualify for graduation before the spring of the twelfth grade.

Georgia High School Writing Test

GHSWT

Students in the eleventh grade must pass the GHSWT to earn a regular education diploma. The writing test requires students to produce a composition of no more than two pages on an assigned topic. The main administration of the GHSWT takes place in the fall of the eleventh grade year. The test is administered three times a year so that students have multiple opportunities to take the test before the end of the twelfth grade.

Georgia Kindergarten 
Inventory of
Developing Skills 

 GKIDS

The Georgia Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (GKIDS) is a year-long, performance-based assessment. The goal of the assessment program is to provide teachers with information about the level of instructional support needed by individual students entering kindergarten and first grade. GKIDS should serve as one indicator of first grade readiness. The primary purpose of GKIDS is to provide ongoing diagnostic information about kindergarten students’ developing skills in the following areas: 

  • English Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Personal/Social Development
  • Approached to Learning 
  • Motor Skills

 Grade 3 Writing Assessment

 

The writing assessment for grade 3 consists of teacher evaluation of student writing using an analytic scoring system. Using representative samples of student writing collected throughout the year, third-grade teachers use the analytic scoring rubrics to determine the performance levels in each domain for each child in the classroom. The Georgia Grade Three Writing Assessment covers four types of writing:

  • Narrative
  • Informational
  • Persuasive
  • Response to Literature.

 Grade 5 Writing Assessment

 

The writing assessment for grade 5 consists of an evaluation of each student response to an assigned prompt.  Students are allowed approximately 120 minutes to write their essays. The writing assessment must be administered in one day. Students are assigned a topic from a prompt bank representing three genres:

  • Narrative
  • Informational
  • Persuasive

 Iowa Test of Basic Skills, Form A

 ITBS/A

Each local system must administer the ITBS/A at some time during the school year.  Georgia law mandates that a nationally norm-referenced test (testing reading, mathematics, science, and social studies) be administered, annually, to students in grades 3, 5, and 8 . The purpose of the norm-referenced test is to obtain information about how the performance of Georgia's students compare with that of students in a national sample, an external reference group.
